10 kind things you can do today that cost nothing

The notion of ‘being kind’ often conjures imagery of soup kitchen volunteers, bake sale fundraisers and running marathons for charity. As incredible as these activities are, they make it easy to forget that kindness can be so very simple!

As a reminder I have assembled this list of kind things we can do right now that cost us nothing, but will leave the world a better place than we found it.

1. Call a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while

Just call for a chat, they will appreciate that you are thinking of them. You could even write a letter if you’re feeling creative.

2. Be a good listener

Most of us are much better at talking than listening. Try being present and really hearing what the other person has to say without thinking about what you’re going to say next.

3. Say thank you

Think about someone you feel grateful for and let them know that they are appreciated.

4. Make someone a cup of tea

Sometimes something as little as making someone a cup of tea could really brighten their day and it shows that you care.

5. Smile at a stranger

Back before we had phones to bury our heads in, people used to smile and greet each other in the street, try it! I bet you will get a warm fuzzy feeling and might even get a smile back too.

6. Give your seat up

If there is someone on the bus that looks like they need a seat more than you do, then offer yours. Remember that one day you might be the one who needs the seat.

7. Pick up some litter

You don’t have to go out with a grabber and a bin bag but if you see a piece you can pop it in a bin. It makes the place nicer for everyone.

8. Hold a door open

It’s just a helpful and nice thing to do, especially if they have their hands full.

9. Give someone a compliment

The nicest compliments are genuine ones, especially about someone’s personality. Those ones really stick.

10. Take care of yourself

Kindness starts with you, so go easy and be a friend to yourself. Plus, It’s easier to help other people when you are feeling positive and happy.

Although kindness is for everyday, Random Acts of Kindness Day is coming up on Thursday 17th February which aims to shine a light on being kind and make kindness the norm, so get involved!
